Abena Wariebi: A Gentlewoman

Such a joyous and uplifting person, who is also honest is hard to come by, so when I met this young lady I cherished those qualities about her. She radiates a sense of knowledge and understanding, where she can teach you, help you understand yourself better as well as the world you see around you. Her mind is complex as she discusses her experiences with other cultures and her faith; her open-mindedness allows her to actually see the world as she is active in it. But she has no problem calling you out on your shit, if you say something that is not fully thought out or explained ( it happened to me and I was put on the spot! I wasn't ready!)... Yet, Her spirit is curious, asking questions only to increase her wisdom.  Her humility and love encompass anyone new within its' reach. So take a moment to get to know a few things about her. I give you Abena Wariebi

Birthday: September 16

Favorite Word:

"true." I probably say that too much.

Spirit animal: wolf. I took the test

Her Art & Contribution:

Why do you actively help people?

Why do I engage in the community I live in?  Cause I want it to be better. I want people to be able to live good lives, the lives they've dreamed of. It's about more than just survival. That's why I love working with youth, so much potential that just needs to be activated.

What is your connection to art? in your own words

Art engages with the individual and also with the greater community. So does service. It’s done at the individual level, and group level. It empowers an individual to do more for his or her community. Art brings people together and so does service. Lol I could be making this entire thing up. They’re both great things though. That much I know is true.

Talk to me about your Spanish.

Spanish...lol. Well first it was just a requirement for my major. Then I studied abroad and I fell in love with the Latino culture. Then I started my internship and the language became more than just a language for me. It became the thing that would allow me to connect with my students at the level at which I wanted. It was the way in which I would communicate with them. They've personalized it for me in a way that I never thought possible. When I think of it, I think of them.

What is it about traveling that moves and inspires you?

Traveling is beautiful. There is so much to see in the world, and I'm not satisfied if I don't see it all, or at least make an attempt to. I'm fascinated by all the cultures and people in this world. #peoplewatcher

What is you best service experience?

My best service experience...hmmm, it would have to be my alternative spring break trip to southwest Philly spring 2013. That was when I knew I wanted to be teacher, after seeing how bad it was in the schools were. That's how you know when an experience was powerful, when you're moved to action.

What are something you would rant about and why?

Things I would rant about would be human nature, God, and culture...There's so much to say about  all that stuff.

Perspective on Abena:

Who do you think you are?

I am a dreamer, an optimist, and a believer, a thinker, an analyst, an introverted being. I see hope, and I let my passion drive me. I am committed. I’m a world traveler, change maker, justice seeker. Lover of God, I place my life in His hands. I seek peace, joy, and love above all things.

What's your thing?

What is my thing? Hmmm lol. I guess my thing would be social justice, social justice in education. What I mean is equality and equity in education. I put a lot of time and energy into that. I also love traveling, that's my new thing.

What is the message you want to convey?

"Anything is possible." People say this a lot but I don’t know if they really believe it. Faith goes a long way. I don't like to draw conclusions or make definitive statements about people or circumstances because in a moments notice things can change. Reality is never fixed.

Personal Philosophy

Live the life you've dreamed of.

Random fact?

I'm terrified of cats.

How did come across your medium?

Its not a medium, but I came across my love for traveling in summer 2013 when I studied abroad in Xela, Guatemala. It was awesome. And umm, volunteering, well I've been volunteering for forever. I got more into it though my junior year of college, 2012.

When/where did it all begin

Junior year, 2012. That was the year it all happened. At University of Maryland, College Park. #terps

Talk about your style both in how you dress and how you create.

I wear stuff that’s simple, stylish, and trendy, but in a not so obvious way. I like wearing black grey and white.

What's your perspective of society today? or rather something that "grinds your gears' about it

There are a lot of problems in society. There are also a lot of people who could make a difference. I wish more people were activated to do so. That’s what grinds my gears the most, the fact that everyone always wants to talk about what sucks in society but hardly anyone wants to get up and make a difference.

Who/what inspires you?/do you have a muse?

Who inspires me? Hmmm...People who follow their passions, the risk takers, the ones who do exactly what they were created for.

Favorite Disney movie?

...hmmm I like Aladdin a lot. I thought Jasmine was really pretty.
